Denver Broncos considering Ben McAdoo for QB coach job
The Denver Broncos are re-shuffling some of their coaching staff, and former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo is on their list of possible QB coaches.
The Denver Broncos are making some moves on their coaching staff, considering all options, and that includes former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo in an assistant role, apparently.
Mike Klis reported on Tuesday that the Broncos are considering McAdoo for their vacant quarterbacks coach job, which was most recently filled in an interim role by Klein Kubiak.
Along with McAdoo, the Broncos are considering former Bengals quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Ken Zampese…
First of all, McAdoo.
This would be a big ‘name’ addition for the Broncos and a guy that was obviously pursued as a head coach by the Giants for a reason. In addition to being a quarterbacks coach with the Green Bay Packers from 2012-13, McAdoo was the offensive coordinator of the Giants from 2014-15 before getting his promotion to head coach in 2016.
The Giants were successful in McAdoo’s first year as a head coach, but finished with the second worst record in the NFL this year.
That record included a win over the Denver Broncos in Denver, where the Giants’ offense put the vaunted Denver defense to shame.
McAdoo, not unlike coaches like Wade Phillips, is probably a better coordinator/position coach than head coach. Thus, I view this potential hiring with optimism.
In his two seasons as offensive coordinator in New York, Eli Manning threw a total of 65 touchdown passes and the running game saw a significant boost from 2014 to 2015.
In 2016, McAdoo’s first year as head coach of the Giants, Manning threw another 26 touchdown passes and the Giants made the playoffs.
This past season, however, was a train wreck for the Giants, and McAdoo was fired before the season ended.
In addition to McAdoo, the Broncos are considering longtime Bengals coach Ken Zampese, who has been part of Marvin Lewis’ staff and has been with the Bengals since they drafted Carson Palmer out of USC in 2003.

Zampese has obviously done a very good job of developing young quarterbacks, specifically Palmer and Andy Dalton in his time with the Bengals.
While Palmer’s career in Cincinnati ended prematurely because of injuries, he was selected to Pro Bowls in 2005 and 2006.
After the Bengals decided to move on from Palmer prior to the 2011 season, they drafted Andy Dalton in the second round, and he’s been their starter ever since.
Dalton has been selected to three Pro Bowls in his career, and has thrown 25 or more touchdown passes in four of his seven NFL seasons.
The Broncos need some stability for their quarterback room, and specifically, coaches who know how to work with young players. In that regard, both of these guys would be solid candidates but because Zampese has spent a number of years working with Vance Joseph in Cincinnati, he would seem to be the more logical choice, especially given his work with young quarterbacks over the past decade-and-a-half.
The Broncos are not going to rush to make changes to their coaching staff, but these two candidates could be highly sought after assistants, and they may have to move quickly to get one of them into the fold.
