The Denver Broncos are bringing back Bill Musgrave as their offensive coordinator, keeping their core of coaches in-tact for another season…

The Denver Broncos could have made a clean sweep of their entire coaching staff and I don’t think anyone would have been surprised.

But a clean sweep was not made, in fact, quite the opposite.

The Broncos not only retained head coach Vance Joseph, but they decided to bring back interim offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave as the permanent offensive coordinator for 2018.

Musgrave was brought in with Vance Joseph’s original staff last January as the quarterbacks coach, a shocking move considering the wild success he’d just recently had with Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders the year prior.

Musgrave taking a demotion to coach with the Broncos turned out to be a great opportunity, as he replaced Mike McCoy who was fired in the middle of the season.

Over the course of the season, the Broncos ranked 27th in points scored, 20th in passing offense, and 12th in rushing offense.

Musgrave’s offense seemed to suit the quarterbacks better than McCoy’s did, even though arguably the most successful game offensively came with McCoy calling the shots.

Musgrave was able to extract a 23-point outing from Trevor Siemian in a victory, a 25-point outing from Brock Osweiler in a victory, and a 24-point outing from Paxton Lynch in a close loss.

It wasn’t like the Broncos were scoring every possession, but it was a clear sign of improvement over the horror we saw in Denver’s eight-game losing streak.

Every quarterback had some measure of tangible success when Musgrave took over, and I think clearly proved that he is the man for the job going forward.

Whatever the Broncos decide to do at the quarterback position from this point forward, it’s been proven that Musgrave can create and implement quickly a system for them to have success. We saw Lynch struggle at times like a rookie in his two appearances this season, but clear signs of progression from his first game (in Oakland) to his second game (home vs. Kansas City).

Those things, along with how well Brock Osweiler played against the Colts and Trevor Siemian against the Jets, went a long way toward determining that Musgrave should be this team’s coordinator for the immediate future.

He’s proven himself now with multiple different teams as a coordinator, and the Broncos, I feel, have a really good one on their hands.
