1st Round: Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

I’m running out of ways to spin this pick.

The Broncos picking in the top 10 are in the perfect range to draft or trade up and draft Baker Mayfield. The scariest thought I have right now is that someone would trade up ahead of them to pick him, and that could very well happen.

If the Broncos lose on Sunday, they have a chance to move up to the 4th overall slot in the draft, and that would probably be high enough to ensure the ability to draft Mayfield, who doesn’t appear to be sneaking out of the top 10 of this class anymore.

Mayfield is a phenomenal athlete, a Heisman Trophy winner, and a great underdog story.

He was once a walk-on at Texas Tech and due to crazy circumstances, he ended up starting as a true freshman walk-on for the Red Raiders.

He transferred to Oklahoma after just one year at Texas Tech, and has gotten better and better every year.

Mayfield does everything I would want to see a young quarterback do well, and he has such a natural game.

What I mean by that is, Mayfield looks well-coached in almost every area, it doesn’t seem like he has to force things to happen. He just makes them happen. He eludes pressure, he makes throws under pressure, he hits easy throws, and he can drop it in a bucket deep downfield.

He has a strong arm when he needs to zip it in, and he has touch downfield when he needs it.

There’s no weakness to his game that, with tweaking and coaching, can’t be quickly corrected at the next level.

I think Mayfield would solve the Broncos’ woes at quarterback for a long time to come. The last mock draft I did, I broke continuity and predicted the picks with the assumption that Kirk Cousins would sign in Denver.

For this exercise, we’re not projecting any free agent pickups just yet. If the Broncos go into the draft without spending big money on a quarterback, Mayfield would be my top choice.
