John Elway’s comments on Wednesday about scouting quarterbacks seem to indicate the Broncos are getting ready for a long-term investment at the position…

We all know the Denver Broncos are getting set to make some big time changes to the roster and perhaps the coaching staff as well. One position of focus going into the offseason?

Quarterback.

Obviously.

The Broncos have an obvious hole to fill at the quarterback position, and they’ve tried exploring almost every avenue to fill it up to this point, except for using the top 10 of the NFL Draft.

John Elway is in a position he hasn’t been in since taking over as the top decision maker for the Broncos, and that’s picking in the top 10 of the draft. The last time the Broncos had a top 10 pick?

Von Miller happened.

This time around, the Broncos will be seeking a franchise player at the quarterback position, though they could also potentially look to fill that void in free agency. There are rumors the Broncos are the most interested team in Kirk Cousins, but time will tell there.

What we do know is that Elway is expressing obvious interest in the entire 2018 NFL Draft class at the quarterback position, and is taking trips to watch each of the top players at their respective bowl games.

Elway was seen on the sideline at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl watching Josh Allen, and he elaborated on what exactly he’s up to at these bowl games…

Everyone could have a different interpretation of what Elway said right there, but here’s what I got from the second half of it…

It sounds like Elway and the Broncos have already gone past the point of just watching the film on these players. They are already on to the personal evaluation of this year’s quarterback prospects, and that’s a huge development.

This means the Broncos likely have already formed a pretty educated opinion about every quarterback in the draft as far as how they are on the field, and the next step is going to be getting to know them all personally.

Luckily, a number of these guys will be at the Reese’s Senior Bowl in January, where Elway said he and his staff will also be.

Elway is expected to be in attendance at Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield’s first college football playoff matchup as Oklahoma gets set to take on Georgia, one of the best defenses in the NCAA.

He is also expected to attend the bowl games for Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen (if he plays).

The fact that the Broncos are moving on to the personal evaluation of these players is pretty telling of what they think of their current group, and the clearest indicator we have yet that major changes will be made at the quarterback position.
