The Denver Broncos decided to move practice indoors this week because of cold weather. Was that decision smart considering where they play?

The Denver Broncos have apparently been spoiled by recent road trips to California to play the Oakland Raiders and South Florida to play the Miami Dolphins, because they moved practice to their indoor facility when the weather was ‘too cold’.

Here’s what head coach Vance Joseph had to say about the team moving practices to the indoor facility:

"“It’s cold (laughing). But on a serious note, you want guys to be able to focus. You want an environment where they can learn and where coaches can teach. When it’s cold, it’s tough and when it’s warmer, it’s more comfortable. It was cold.”Vance Joseph (quotes via Broncos PR)"

On one hand, if I were a player, I would probably be pretty pleased with Joseph’s decision. The weather in Denver for this weekend is supposed to be in the low 60s, so perhaps this decision was not only a matter of comfort, but of strategy by the Broncos’ head coach.

That said, the decision to move practice indoors for any reason other than impossible practice conditions outdoors is borderline heresy in the football world.

It doesn’t seem like an NFL team would move practice inside unless the ‘cold’ being spoken of was actually unbearable to stand in, but the lowest temperature in Denver this past week at mid-day was 30 degrees.

That raises a bit of a red flag to me, because while 30 degrees is certainly not t-shirt and shorts weather, it’s definitely bearable for an NFL football club that plays on an outdoor field on Sundays.

On the one hand, I completely agree that you don’t want players to lose focus on a day of game preparation just because it’s cold. On the other hand, you don’t want them to be unprepared when they encounter cold conditions in a game.

The Broncos also have paid a considerable amount of money for that indoor facility, so they probably figured they might as well use it since they have it.

This might not be the most popular decision Joseph has made, and maybe it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but I think everything has to be considered when you look at the fact that John Elway has already said this team looked ‘soft’ before.

If Elway thought the team was soft before, what would he think about moving practice indoors for 30-degree temperatures?
