Denver Broncos general manager John Elway is not happy with the current state of the team. In fact, he’s embarrassed at how things are…

John Elway is not indefensible when it comes to the current state of the Denver Broncos, but he is in charge of making decisions regardless, and right now, he doesn’t like where things are heading.

Obviously.

In speaking with Dave Logan on Orange & Blue 760, Elway commented on the team’s current coaching staff and his plans moving forward.

His comments were pretty revealing:

Elway is updating everyone publicly on something that was actually reported on Monday, which is that the Broncos will not be making any more changes to their coaching staff before the end of the season.

Denver has four games remaining on their schedule, and that could be it for the majority of the current coaching staff, including head coach Vance Joseph.

Joseph was picked by Elway to lead this team, but so far, his team has struggled badly and is in the midst of the worst losing streak the Broncos have experienced in the Super Bowl era.

The quote in the tweet above is telling enough about how Elway feels right now, but it wasn’t just what he said — it’s how he said it.

To me, when I was listening to Elway give that interview with Logan, it sounded like Elway was giving an exit interview. The expectations of the Denver Broncos as a franchise are to win. Elway was clear in that interview also that this team — he believes — has too many talented players to be playing this poorly.

He also noted that the Broncos aren’t just losing, they are getting blown out.

Elway didn’t sound like he would have any choice but to clean house at the end of the season, whether I’m reading into that too much or not. It’s just how he sounded to me.

If that’s the case, the Broncos will embark on their fourth head coaching search in Elway’s tenure. He inherited a team that had already fired Josh McDaniels, hiring John Fox as his first head coach.

When Fox failed to put the Broncos over the proverbial hump, Elway opted instead for his good friend Gary Kubiak

Elway didn’t fire Kubiak, though sweeping changes were expected to that coaching staff following the 2016 season anyway. Kubiak stepped down for health purposes.

Elway hired Vance Joseph to replace Kubiak despite the strong connection the Broncos’ franchise had to Kyle Shanahan, son of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

It remains to be seen what options would be available this offseason, but it doesn’t appear as though the Broncos will make any moves until then.
