The Denver Broncos waived cornerback Lorenzo Doss, a former fifth round draft pick out of Tulane. Doss was stuck behind a number of talented players…

The Denver Broncos made a roster move on Thursday, waiving cornerback Lorenzo Doss.

There was no corresponding move made at the time of this posting, but the move is curious considering the timing and the fact that the Broncos had arguably the shortest injury report of the season on Wednesday.

Doss was listed as active for three games this season prior to being waived. Here is the original report:

Doss left Tulane in 2015 with the second most interceptions in school history (15) and did a great job of picking off passes in training camp the past couple of years for the Broncos, obviously having a little bit better idea of what the offense was doing before the ball was even snapped.

In preseason action, Doss’ play was poor enough that many felt like he wouldn’t end up making the final roster anyway. For a former fifth round pick, Doss has done well to stick around this long.

His Broncos career includes four tackles and two passes defended.

As Jeff Legwold of ESPN points out, this is another loss in the Broncos’ 2015 draft class, which started with nine players and is now down to just four:

Now, the only players from the 2015 class that remain on the roster are Shane Ray, Jeff Heuerman, Max Garcia, and Trevor Siemian.

Of course, it should be noted that among the nine picks in the Broncos’ 2015 class, three picks were at the very bottom of the seventh round.

Still, it’s a bit unfortunate that they haven’t been able to develop more of these players, who are all now in their third NFL season. Ty Sambrailo, the team’s second round pick that year, was traded to the Atlanta Falcons for a draft pick in 2018.

Siemian will not likely be around past the 2017 season, so the Broncos will have — at most — three of their 2015 draft picks on the roster next year, and you could make the case that neither Heuerman nor Garcia will or should still be around.

One can only speculate as to why the Broncos made this move. Perhaps they are looking to add another cornerback with some upside to the fray, and the timing of the recent release of Jalen Collins by the Atlanta Falcons makes some sense. Collins was a second round pick of the Falcons back in 2015, so in a way, that could potentially help recoup what the Broncos have lost.
