After firing offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, the next logical move for the Denver Broncos is to start Paxton Lynch at quarterback…

The Denver Broncos made a surprising but not undeserved move on Monday when they fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. What’s next for this offense and this team in general?

Well, we know that McCoy’s firing opens the door for Bill Musgrave to take over at the offensive coordinator position, and there’s reason for optimism there because of Musgrave’s recent success with the Oakland Raiders and their young group led by Derek Carr.

As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Musgrave was the better option for offensive coordinator to begin with when the Broncos hired both he and McCoy this offseason, but getting both seemed to be an embarrassment of riches at the time.

With McCoy out of the picture and Musgrave stepping in, the next logical move for the Broncos is to hand the ball to Paxton Lynch as their new starting quarterback.

The Broncos promoted Lynch from having ‘no timetable’ to return to action to the backup quarterback and active against the Bengals this past week.

With Brock Osweiler having a ‘shoulder injury’ last week, Lynch even received some first-team reps. It seems like the writing is on the wall, and for the final six games of the season, we’ll see Lynch as the starting quarterback of the Broncos.

I won’t make any firm declarations, but the time is now. It feels right to everyone, and with Denver being virtually eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday, there’s no reason anymore to keep Lynch on the bench.

He’s going to get his shot.

With Lynch coming in, the Broncos will finally get a legitimate look at their former first round pick. Lynch started a couple of games for the Broncos in 2016, and came in for relief duty in another. Many feel like he’s a ‘bust’ after those three games plus his preseason performance in 2017, but is that really the case?

Can you deem a guy a bust after that much time?

I guess if you don’t have it, you just don’t have it. But I think the Broncos owe it to themselves and to Lynch to spend these next six games doing everything in their power to make him successful and see what he’s got.

You simply have to find out what you have in the young quarterback, even if it’s on as small of a sample size as six games. I think Lynch and Chad Kelly will be the only quarterbacks on the current roster to be back with the team next year, which will give Lynch the edge in terms of being the starter for 2018 depending on what the Broncos do in the offseason.

It’s a rough time for the Broncos right now, but at least now knowing that really nothing is at stake, we can all freely watch and see what happens as Lynch gets his big chance to prove he can be ‘the guy’ in Denver once and for all.
