The Denver Broncos’ all-star offensive coaching staff has not worked out well, and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was fired. Bill Musgrave was promoted…
Many of us are excited about Black Friday coming up this week, the day after Thanksgiving. Black Monday, perhaps the first of a couple of Black Mondays in Denver, is not as exciting for those involved. The Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy after 10 games in his reunion with the team, promoting Bill Musgrave in the process.
McCoy’s offense in Denver was one of the worst in the league, not only because of his play-calling but also because of the players’ inability to simply hold onto the ball, much less score with it.
It’s surprising to see McCoy go before, say, Brock Olivo, but I’m guessing the Broncos have a method to their madness here.
Or maybe they don’t. This was first reported by Ian Rapoport:
Bill Musgrave, who was hired to be the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach this offseason, is being promoted to offensive coordinator. Musgrave is one of a couple of coaches in Denver that had coordinating experience prior to being hired, but as far as offensive success, he was perhaps the most qualified to run the job.

Musgrave’s offense in Oakland was explosive last season, leading to an MVP-caliber season from Derek Carr. The Broncos don’t have Derek Carr, obviously, but perhaps Musgrave can come in and provide a spark.
He’ll face his former team, the Oakland Raiders, in his first week as coordinator for the Broncos.
The firing of McCoy seems like merely a sign of things to come in Denver in the next eight weeks or so. This team has been horrendous, one of the worst let-downs in the league, and now McCoy has been fired by two AFC West teams in 2017.
Yikes.
Whatever happens from this point forward for the Broncos will be very interesting to watch. Musgrave has obviously had great success in recent years developing a young, talented quarterback. It seems like he’ll get the opportunity to show he can create an offense suited to the strengths of Paxton Lynch, who is likely to start this week against Oakland.
