The Denver Broncos promoted outside linebacker Deiontrez Mount to the 53-man roster on Wednesday, just one day after they decided to move on from veteran Kasim Edebali.

Mount has been on the practice squad with the Broncos all year after jumping in with the team as a waiver claim back in the preseason.

Part of the class of 2015, Mount was a sixth round pick of the Tennessee Titans out of Louisivlle, where he landed on injured reserve as a rookie (October, 2015). After making the Titans’ roster as a rookie, Mount recorded his first career interception and appeared on his way to a decent role with the team, but was waived at the end of the 2016 preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts then scooped up Mount for their practice squad, where he spent a little over a year.

This past preseason, Mount was waived/injured by the Colts and picked up shortly thereafter by the Denver Broncos, who have kept him around.

Having had the past couple of months to participate with the practice squad, it stands to reason that the Broncos felt Mount was healthy enough and up to speed enough to contribute at least in a special teams role, because Kasim Edebali was a core part of the Broncos’ special teams units.

We wrote about Mount back when he was originally acquired by the Broncos, and due to the timing and nature of his being signed so late in the preseason, it was clear the Broncos had done some scouting on Mount and simply needed to wait their turn to get a chance at him.

Now, he’s on the 53-man roster, but he’ll have to work hard to prove he belongs there.

The Broncos have depth at the outside linebacker position, so they could be protecting Mount from signing on with another team by making this move.
