Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph announced on Monday to the media that the team would be starting Brock Osweiler at quarterback against the New England Patriots, his second start in his second stint with the team.

Osweiler made his 2017 debut for the Broncos against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 50 percent of his passes with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Broncos have still not found a permanent solution at the quarterback position, though I don’t know if that was entirely expected of Osweiler after one start.

He will get at least one more chance to prove himself to the coaching staff after an underwhelming first outing.

Some feel like this could be Osweiler’s final chance to make an impression with Paxton Lynch nearing a return to full health:

It could very well be that Osweiler is simply a placeholder for the 2016 first round pick, and the timing would certainly seem to be convenient. It’s possible the Broncos had initially hoped that Trevor Siemian would be able to hold down the fort until Lynch was ready to go, but he was so bad he had to be pulled for the only available alternative at the moment.

Osweiler signed on with the Broncos after brief stints in Houston and Cleveland, and returned to the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

One of Osweiler’s most memorable starts for the Broncos was a home game against the New England Patriots, where the Broncos seemed down and out early in the game before Osweiler and the offense engineered a comeback for the ages, one that was capped off with a phenomenal run in overtime by C.J. Anderson.

Osweiler has proven himself before in the NFL as someone who can make plays in clutch situations, but he has also proven he will make really poor decisions far too often to be relied upon.

There was a certain level of optimism with Osweiler this past weekend just because he was an alternative to Trevor Siemian, but the Broncos didn’t fare much better in terms of the overall result.

This weekend’s start against New England could be Osweiler’s final chance to prove himself as a full-time starter in the NFL.
