The Denver Broncos are allergic to scoring in the Red Zone as they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. But there is a “player pill” that can help.

According to Football Outsiders, the Denver Broncos are ranked dead last in the AFC in percentage of touchdowns in the Red Zone (45%). Trevor Siemian and the rest of the offense must do everything possible to improve in the scoring area. One choice in particular involves Jamaal Charles.

Charles signed a one-year deal in the offseason in hopes of ressurecting his playing career. He has done exceptionally well in the short amount of carries. Throughout Charles’ time with the Chiefs, he averaged five yards. His worst year came in 2016 with 3.3 yards per carry. With the Denver Broncos, Charles is providing plenty of quality in a short quantity.

The Broncos starter C.J. Anderson is playing well between the 20’s, but struggles mightily in first contact. His first contact does not bode great for Red Zone efficiency. It is a bit bizarre Anderson is ineffective with scoring. He is difficult to tackle.

In order to tackle Anderson, two people must bring him down. However, it is easy to understand how tough it can be. The first initial contact comes from multiple defensive linemen pushing the offensive line back. For the Denver Broncos to counter they must replace Anderson with Charles.

This slippery pill of Jamaal Charles gives the Broncos best chance initially to give them success. The team must find ways to create opportunities in the red zone. In order to score, the Broncos must give their best players the ball and in space. Charles, despite the lack of touches, is one of the more dynamic players on the team.

Mike McCoy could dangle second year running back Devontae Booker in the backfield with Charles split out as a wide receiver. This gives Siemian two effective running backs to target. This is not a knock on Anderson, but the team needs to unleash fresh blood to be effective starting tomorrow.

Do not let this opportunity go to waste. Jamaal Charles is the answer to Red Zone success.
