4. Impatience

What gets lost on so many, and I alluded to this in the introduction, is that it takes time to develop an NFL quarterback.

The Broncos and the devoted fan base have not often had to go through the tough times of truly developing a young quarterback.

Jay Cutler was the last, 10 years ago, and that was short-lived.

With all the veteran quarterbacks the Broncos have brought in since John Elway retired, they haven’t really needed to be patient. Of course, there were the dark days where Josh McDaniels thought he could make anyone into a Pro Bowl quarterback, but we have chosen to pretty much forget those days…

It takes a lot of patience to develop a young quarterback, and Trevor Siemian has performed better than most players at his position historically over the course of his first 16 starts. Even though the team missed the playoffs in 2016, the ride with Siemian hasn’t been all that bad.

In fact, it’s been pretty incredible, all things considered.

Siemian isn’t a risk-taker, which a lot of NFL fans appreciate nowadays. They want the ‘go big or go home’ mentality from their quarterback, and Siemian is just not that type of guy.

That personality of Siemian drove a lot of fans crazy as he was content a lot of times as a rookie to just play it safe and take a check down.

It was infuriating to a point, but Siemian has developed a confidence over the course of his time as the starter, and is taking more calculated risks along with the same plays he was making a season ago, just with much more frequency and even better ball placement.

Now that the Broncos have seen some of the best of what Siemian can do, perhaps they — and the fans — can afford him some much needed time to continue his development and see how far this rabbit hole goes.
