Denver Broncos running back Jamaal Charles didn’t practice on Wednesday, but he was simply given a veteran’s day off as a precaution…

The Denver Broncos listed running back Jamaal Charles on the injury report Wednesday after he was held out of practice. On the injury report, Charles is listed as a ‘DNP’ with a ‘Knee’ which was definitely cause for initial concern.

Thankfully, head coach Vance Joseph quelled all our fears: Charles was simply taking a scheduled veteran’s day off, along with cornerback Aqib Talib.

This is something Gary Kubiak implemented in his time with Denver, and it seemed to be effective in keeping some of the veteran players fresh throughout the season.

Joseph is wise to adopt it.

"“Aqib Talib was ‘DNP’, but just a vet day. He’s fine. It was more of a recovery vet day for him. [RB] Jamaal Charles, same state there, more of a vet day.”Vance Joseph (quotes via Broncos PR)"

As the Broncos prepare for a week one matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, the number one goal as far as these players are concerned is staying healthy. Jamaal Charles is a player who is obviously being handled with extreme care, given the amount of time he’s spent recovering from a knee injury suffered two seasons ago.

Charles looked extremely explosive in training camp and the preseason, and will likely be eased into the lineup with 8-12 touches per game, depending on how he’s feeling. The Broncos will have to closely monitor whether or not there’s swelling in Charles’ knee after the rigors of a regular season NFL game.

The Broncos have an extended week of practice since they play the Monday night game, so it makes sense to ease some players along.

Other players are not as fortunate as Charles, and are missing practice with injuries that could force them to miss the first game. Among them are defensive lineman Zach Kerr, who has been dealing with a knee injury.
