With college football season starting up, 2018 NFL Draft preparations are already in full swing. SMU wideout Courtland Sutton could be an option for Denver…

Week one of the college football season is in the books, which means we’re already getting a good look at some of the top prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft. One prospect that will attract a ton of attention this season is SMU wide receiver Courtland Sutton, a player that is expected to contend to be the first receiver off the board come time for the 2018 NFL Draft.

Sutton is a senior who has shown an ability to make big plays downfield, of course, but more impressive is the savvy with which he plays the game at such a young age. He’s already got NFL caliber skills, which made it a bit surprising when he returned to school for a final season.

In Matt Miller’s first mock draft of the season over at Bleacher Report, he has the Denver Broncos making Sutton their first round pick in the 2018 Draft. Here’s a little bit of what he had to say about the pick:

"“The run on wide receivers starts here. The Denver Broncos don’t have a huge need at the position, but general manager John Elway has to look at the depth chart and see where a big, strong receiver like Courtland Sutton (6’4″, 215 lbs) could help improve the offense.”Matt Miller"

Miller is right in that the Broncos don’t seem to have a huge need at the receiver position right now, especially after just drafting Carlos Henderson and Isaiah McKenzie this past year. The situation is interesting however, because the Broncos will probably be without Cody Latimer at this point next year, as well as potentially Bennie Fowler.

Jordan Taylor is coming up through the ranks and could be a stud, but the ability to add a playmaker of the caliber of Sutton would be tough to pass up.

As is often the case with some of these early predictions, Sutton is a guy that I could see ultimately going much higher than this. Some already have him ranked as the top receiver in the draft next year.

The Broncos have needs elsewhere on the roster, and somewhat of an unsettling situation at the quarterback position. There’s no doubt they’ll be open to all options in round one of the draft. With Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders approaching their age 30 seasons, age could also be a factor.

At any rate, all of these things considered and taken into account, it’s tough even now to see the Broncos looking at taking a receiver early in next year’s draft.
