Denver Broncos rookies Jake Butt, Carlos Henderson, and Chad Kelly will go on a couple different injury lists to begin the 2017 season…

There’s plenty of Denver Broncos news to get to as rosters are being cut down to 53, most of it bad news. At least some of the bad news is not a surprise, and we’ll see three rookies from this team start the season on different injured lists.

Third round pick Carlos Henderson is perhaps the most disappointing of the three, because he didn’t have an injury coming into camp. The Broncos lost Henderson to a thumb injury, and he had surgery to repair a ligament there.

That injury could certainly linger for a while, and of course for a receiver, a thumb injury is about as bad as it gets when you have to catch and hold onto the football.

There’s a possibility, albeit small, that Henderson could return to the active roster at some point. The Broncos are already planning on using one of their return designations from IR on outside linebacker Shane Ray.

Jake Butt will go on the Non-Football Injury list, as will quarterback Chad Kelly.

Butt suffered an ACL injury while at Michigan, and his recovery –at least from what we have heard — is going well.

Different from the injured reserve, the Broncos aren’t limited to how many players they can bring off the non-football injury list since the condition was pre-existing, and he didn’t practice at all during training camp.

For Kelly, the news is a disappointment because he had a clear opportunity to seize a backup spot on this roster, but his health simply would not allow for it.

Kyle Sloter, who was waived by the team after playing incredibly well, took Kelly’s spot this offseason as the team’s camp arm.

There’s a chance Sloter will be brought back to the Broncos’ practice squad, and if the team adds Brock Osweiler as has been reported, they could have five quarterbacks in the meeting room this year.
