After the offseason program, training camp, and two preseason games, the Denver Broncos are expected to name Trevor Siemian their starting quarterback…

As if it weren’t abundantly clear after the Denver Broncos’ second preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, Trevor Siemian is expected to be named the team’s starting quarterback when Vance Joseph addresses the media on Monday afternoon, per multiple reports.

So, for the time being, speculation can be done. The decision is apparently in, and the Broncos are going with their 2016 starter and 2015 seventh round draft choice, Trevor Siemian, as this year’s starting quarterback.

Unlike in 2016, however, it really does feel like Siemian beat Paxton Lynch in a true competition, rather than backing into a job where he was competing with Mark Sanchez (terrible) and Lynch (raw).

Lynch had every opportunity to seize the job and take Siemian’s spot atop the depth chart, but he just couldn’t do it. That is concerning.

However, it’s still very early for Lynch. That being said, it’s Siemian who has shown progression on the field, specifically in the Broncos’ first two preseason games.

Lynch was not good in his start against San Francisco, other than on a couple of scrambles and a throw here or there. The Broncos didn’t see what they wanted from Lynch in the first preseason game when he went against second and third string players, and struggled badly.

Siemian, on the other hand, was excellent in the Broncos’ second preseason game after a slightly underwhelming start in the opener against the Bears. Siemian’s first drive against the 49ers was a thing of beauty, capped off with a touchdown pass on a back shoulder throw to Jordan Taylor, perfectly placed.

This has to have been a really tough decision for the Broncos to make, but it was necessary. Lynch is a first round pick that they invested heavily in. He’s just not ready yet, and doesn’t appear to have advanced at all since we saw him last year.

It’s really unfortunate for him, but another golden opportunity for Siemian, who put up decent numbers last year but struggled badly with consistency and near interceptions. Siemian has to clean up some of that, as well as show he can be more consistently the guy we saw in Saturday’s game against San Francisco before he’ll inspire a whole lot of confidence in Broncos Country.

At this point in time, there do not seem to be any plans for the Broncos to bring in a quarterback from the outside, but who knows if that could change?

For now, it’ll be Siemian leading the team into the most ‘important’ preseason game against Green Bay, and even more importantly, the opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.
