Amidst the announcement of Trevor Siemian as the team’s starting quarterback for 2017, Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph also let it be known that running back Jamaal Charles would get his chance to shine in the Broncos’ week three preseason matchup against Green Bay:

This is exciting news. For Charles, it’s a chance to prove he still has something left in the tank. There have been rumors swirling this offseason that he’s not a lock to make the 53-man roster, and that may be true with the Broncos’ depth at running back this season.

Even with those rumors, it’s odd to me that Charles could be on the outside looking in, given how the Broncos have approached his offseason work with such delicate care.

According to Charles himself, his knee has been healthy since late June, or earlier depending on when he started cutting and doing all of the things he used to do. The Broncos have been keeping him away from a lot of contact on purpose.

Do you usually do that with a borderline roster player?

As a matter of fact, keeping Charles out of the first two preseason games seems to be an indicator the Broncos want to ensure his health for the start of the regular season.

I could be wrong, but at any rate, Charles will play extensive snaps in the Broncos’ third preseason game, and will get his chance to show off what he can do with the Broncos’ starting unit offensively.

We’ve all seen what Charles is capable of in his time with the Chiefs. At the age of 30, it stands to reason with his knee condition that his time is up, and that’s why the Broncos protected themselves with an incentive-laden contract.

Now, we get to see why Charles was so confident in himself that he accepted that incentive-laden deal.
