The Denver Broncos have added some depth to the linebacker group by bringing back Danny Mason, and released Henry Krieger-Coble…

After learning that Shane Ray would be out 6-8 weeks with a wrist injury, the Denver Broncos took immediate action, making a roster move on Saturday morning. The team announced the signing of linebacker Danny Mason, and subsequent release of tight end Henry Krieger-Coble.

Mason, 26, spent time with the Broncos in 2015 as a reserve/futures contract player who also ended up making the team’s practice squad.

His inclusion on the practice squad was interesting, because Mason was let go when the rosters had to be cut down to 75 players rather than 53. The guys that get released in the first wave of cuts usually don’t get the call to come back to the practice squad, but the Broncos must have seen something in Mason they liked at the time.

He was let go from the Broncos’ practice squad that year and ended up signing on to the Chicago Bears’ practice squad and signing a reserve/futures contract with them last season.

The decision to bring back Mason is a great opportunity for the former undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M Commerce. He’ll get a chance to prove he can provide some much needed depth off the edge.

The decision to cut Henry Krieger-Coble, on the other hand, is a surprising one.

Krieger-Coble was considered one of the best undrafted free agent pickups in the league last year, but Gary Kubiak talked at training camp a year ago about his need to add some weight.

Perhaps that never really happened.

At any rate, the Broncos have a bunch of players at the tight end position that have a chance to make the team, including one of the stars of OTAs, Austin Traylor.

At this point, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of plan to bring in a veteran edge rusher to relieve the loss of Ray and Shaquil Barrett to start the season.
