Gary Kubiak stepped away last season and retired from coaching for the Denver Broncos, but now he has a new role as a scout for the team…
Yesterday the Denver Broncos retained John Elway for another five years. Today, Elway has hired former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak onto the staff to assist with scouting.
The news came quickly on Tuesday morning as Mike Klis with 9News Denver first reported the move. The hiring of Kubiak comes months following his retirement press conference where he stepped away from coaching in January.
Following Kubiak’s retirement, rumors circulated throughout the last several months of his desire to go back into coaching. His desire to remain involved with football is evident and John Elway has wasted no time giving him a prominent role following his own contract extension.
Kubiak’s eye for underrated talent has been a strength of his ever since he got into the realm of coaching. For Kubiak, it also adds to his impressive resume.
From playing, coaching, and now scouting, Kubiak has the ability to be a pivotal piece for the Broncos’ development of players in the years ahead.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network shed a few details on the hire where Kubiak will help scout on the offensive side of the ball…
Kubiak will be involved in scouting the top 100 offensive players, while Tom Heckert will do the top 100 defensive players. https://t.co/qgACIURmi6

Kubiak’s role in scouting will be to evaluate talent at the college level, but he won’t necessarily have to be at Dove Valley on a daily basis. Mike Klis reported that Kubiak will be working from Houston, Texas and will attend meetings in Dove Valley as required.
As a head coach, Kubiak was highly involved with John Elway during draft time where his input played a key role in some of Elway’s decisions. The interest level from Kubiak to stay involved with football has never dissipated.
Should come as no surprise that Kubiak is back in the game. He told me in February he wants to work and was itching to get back. pic.twitter.com/FxsoldItvz

John Elway’s Approach:
John Elway’s approach as an executive in the NFL has operated under the premises of competing for world championships. With so much talent coming up through the college ranks, Elway seemingly has a hunch Kubiak will be able to improve in the area of selecting offensive players who will be centerpieces of the franchise going forward.
With a defense that has depth and talent at every position, the offensive side of the ball perhaps needed some additional focus.
Broncos Country, what are your thoughts on Elway’s decision to hire Gary Kubiak as a scout?
