6. Upgraded Special Teams

By Cameron Parker, Staff Writer

In the draft, John Elway and coaches felt comfortable focusing efforts on special teams.

Remember the days of Trindon Holliday? Holliday would have been the MVP of a playoff game vs. the Baltimore Ravens in 2012 if Rahim Moore bats the ball away on a hail mary attempt…

Fast forward to 2017, where the Denver Broncos drafted Carlos Henderson, Isaiah McKenzie and Brendan Langley as potential candidates to be special teams weapons.

It is likely McKenzie who will man the position as punt returner, a position of desperate need for the Broncos. McKenzie tallied five punt returns for touchdowns and one kickoff return touchdown while in college at Georgia. He has Holliday’s awareness on punts and more strength to hold onto the ball if tacklers try to force a fumble.

New special teams coordinator Brock Olivo also praised McKenzie as one of the best ‘catchers’ of punts in this year’s draft, so muffed punts will hopefully become a thing of the past.

Henderson is one of the best in this year’s rookie class at breaking tackles and making players miss in the open field, so he will be the perfect weapon on kick returns.

If special teams gels, it becomes the cherry on top for a team with a new look offense and defense the same as always. Expect the team to be much different this year.
