Kyle Sloter

Age: 23 – Contract: 3 years remaining ($466,000 cap hit)

Kyle Sloter’s path to the NFL was one of the most unconventional you will find.

He started off as a quarterback prospect at Southern Mississippi, where he’d hoped to earn the top job early on. After an unexpected coaching change, Sloter changed positions to wide receiver, where he had to learn quickly and excelled, but his scholarship was eventually taken away.

After the scholarship fiasco, he transferred to Northern Colorado where he thought he’d have a chance to play some quarterback again. He was getting set to contribute as a wide receiver and backup quarterback for UNC before an injury to the starter pushed him into the starting role.

Sloter took advantage of the new starting gig, one he’d waited five years to get. He made some big splash throws as a quarterback, and also showed off his athleticism and ability to make plays on the run.

He caught the Broncos’ eye, and they brought him in as a fourth quarterback to take snaps while Chad Kelly’s wrist injury healed up.

This will be an interesting player to watch at training camp. The Broncos are probably hoping Sloter can prove himself worthy of a practice squad spot, at least. He has the talent and athleticism to earn a job in the NFL, but his lack of on-field experience could end up being an issue.

If he can prove himself valuable enough, the practice squad would be a perfect landing spot for Sloter, who needs time to develop his craft as a quarterback.
