Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Chad Kelly is in Newport Beach for Mr. Irrelevant week before getting back to football…

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Chad Kelly probably never thought he would be Mr. Irrelevant when he dreamed about the moment he would be drafted into the NFL. Yet, that is exactly what transpired during the 2017 NFL Draft as Kelly was taken with the 253rd and final selection.

He’s now spending the week in Newport Beach for Mr. Irrelevant festivities…

While this week of festivities is cute and everything, the great news with Kelly is that his cast has come off and he will resume throwing next week.

It would be almost impossible for Kelly to come into training camp and win a starting job, and I don’t think that’s really on the Broncos’ radar at this point with his injuries and the fact that he needs plenty of time to adapt to his new team and the NFL game.

There’s nothing wrong with that, in all honesty. A year of learning for Kelly would be beneficial, as it has been for many other quarterbacks before him.

Some have very mixed opinions on Kelly’s future with the team. Some don’t think he’s even going to make the 53-man roster this year, some feel he will go on injured reserve, and some think he’s going to be the starting quarterback as soon as he gets a chance to prove himself on the field.

For me, I view Kelly as a guy the Broncos have flexibility with for 2017. They can get an on-field look at him throughout camp and the offseason, but I think his real chance to compete will be in 2018 when he’s had a full offseason of preparation within this offense.

Watching Kelly at Ole Miss, there were some times he blew me away. There were other times I was wondering what in the world he was trying to do, but those moments were far outweighed by his ability to make throws and win games.

I’m excited to see Kelly in action on the field for the Broncos, and hopefully there are no more health setbacks for him as he gets ready for his first on-field action in quite some time.
