Virgil Green, Tight End

Cody Roark, Staff Writer

In 2017 under a new offensive scheme I have chosen two guys that will have a breakout year under Mike McCoy. In 2016 and years past, the Gary Kubiak failed to evolve to the style of defense played in the NFL. McCoy’s system is modern, evolved, and high octane.

With Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch competing, I cannot tell you for sure it will be one of these guys, but it will be someone they throw to. In my analysis, both Jordan Taylor and Virgil Green are my two guys that I believe will break out in 2017.

Virgil Green is focused on remaining healthy for the first time in his career. Green easily was one of Denver’s best blocking tight ends in Kubiaks zone blocking scheme, but under Mike McCoy’s system Green will be unleashed. Let’s take a glance at tight ends under Mike McCoy’s led offenses.

Antonio Gates was Phillip Rivers most reliable target. In 2013-2015 Gates recorded 1693 yards and 16 touchdowns. A lot of these were in the redzone. Gates was also a third down monster when it came to conversions under McCoy’s system.

We have seen flashes from Virgil Green of what could be. He’s strong, physical, and has enough athletic ability to create problems for defenses. Where Green can improve is consistency in route running and catching the ball.

With Denver drafting Jake Butt and having Jeff Heurman and AJ Derby on the roster, Green will be challenged for time on the field. If he responds well to competition, I believe he can have a breakout year.
