Garett Bolles was a first round pick, but the Broncos aren’t going to be handing him any starting jobs. On the first day of OTAs, Bolles got his first taste of on-field work with the veterans working with the second unit offensive line.

There’s nothing wrong with that at this point, and it means nothing in the grand scheme of things. As Vance Joseph said, Bolles — like everyone else — will have to earn his spot in the lineup, even as a first rounder.

The player that opened with the first team at left tackle was Donald Stephenson, last year’s starting right tackle who struggled at times and also looked okay at times. It would certainly not be ideal to have Stephenson ‘win’ the job at left tackle, unless of course we see significant improvements from a year ago.

Along with Stephenson on the first-team offensive line was Ty Sambrailo, who has struggled with injuries since opening his career as the starting left tackle in 2015. Sambrailo’s injuries are (hopefully) the cause of his struggles the past two seasons, where he has looked flat out awful.

If he can win the right tackle job in camp and OTAs this year, it will be a great sign of his progress since this new coaching staff has no reason to show him any preferential treatment based on his draft status as a former second round pick.
