According to multiple reports, the Denver Broncos are hosting free agent running back Jamaal Charles for a visit on Tuesday, and are ‘enthused’ about the possibility…
During the 2017 NFL Draft, the Broncos traded backup running back Kapri Bibbs to the San Francisco 49ers along with a fifth round pick in this year’s draft for a future fourth round pick. The move to trade Bibbs was shortly followed by the Broncos’ drafting of Coastal Carolina’s De’Angelo Henderson, a small but well-built back with tons of speed and quickness.
There were rumors prior to the draft that the Broncos might flirt around with at least the idea of bringing in Adrian Peterson, but that never came to fruition and Peterson signed on to a loaded New Orleans Saints backfield.
With Peterson off the market, Jamaal Charles’ name remained out there, and the former Kansas City Chiefs superstar will now potentially get to play for a team that he has only beaten three times in 13 career attempts.
The Broncos have owned the Chiefs in Charles’ time there, but it wasn’t for lack on his part. Charles averaged 5.35 yards per carry against the Broncos, the most against any other AFC West opponent. He had seven total touchdowns in 13 games against Denver, but is perhaps more infamously remembered for his numerous fumbles and helmet slam on an early-season Thursday night matchup in Kansas City two seasons ago.
Despite that memory, the Broncos would be fortunate to have the veteran Charles around. He was drafted in 2008, but is still just 30 years old. He’s been working hard to get his body ready for another grueling NFL season, and he looks pretty good:
Adding Charles would give the Broncos more of that coveted ‘juice’ offensively, certainly, as long as he’s healthy. The Broncos and John Elway appear to be in the business of ‘low risk, high reward’ propositions lately, and I am a huge fan of it.
The Broncos took a chance on Chad Kelly late in the draft, and I can’t wait to see how that develops. Adding Charles would push C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker, certainly, and give the Broncos some much needed leadership offensively.
