Broncos OL coach Jeff Davidson beaming over Garett Bolles pick
The Denver Broncos made offensive line coach Jeff Davidson a very happy man when they used their top pick on offensive tackle Garett Bolles…
When the Denver Broncos took offensive tackle Garett Bolles with their top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, they made offensive line coach Jeff Davidson a very happy man. After spending primary free agent assets on Ronald Leary (guard) and Menelik Watson (tackle) to upgrade the line, the Broncos finished their overhaul of the starting line with Bolles.
It was a pick that had Davidson ‘beaming’.
Davidson says drafting someone in the first round is ‘no different’ if they were taken in the seventh round as far as how they are coached and how guys are tasked with earning their positions. However, he says the list of things he likes about Bolles is ‘very long’ and the style of football Bolles plays is something they coveted and is part of the culture they want to impress upon this new Broncos team.
As for whether or not Davidson believe Bolles has a chance to be a day one starter at left tackle?
“I certainly do,” he said confidently.
Bolles said at his pre-draft press conference that he feels the same way:
"“I plan to start as soon as possible. That is my goal. They drafted me with a high draft pick, so they have a lot of expected of me and they expect me to come in and work hard. That’s what I’m going to do. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but you can count on me to come in and work my butt off. I’m going to earn that spot. I don’t want them to give it to me, I want to earn it. That’s what happened at Utah. They told me I could come in and play if I earned it, and that’s what I did. I’m going to come in to rookie mini camp and I’m going to earn my spot. You can count on that. I’m going to come in and work my butt off, get the job done and try to help out our guys up front.”(Quote obtained from Denver Broncos PR)"
The Broncos were thrilled Bolles fell into their laps at the 20th overall pick. Now they need to get to work getting him ready to be that day one starter and franchise left tackle.
