Quarterbacks the Denver Broncos should consider in the 2017 NFL Draft

The Denver Broncos enter the 2017 NFL Draft with two quarterbacks on the roster. Likely to go into OTAs with four, here are some they may consider…

Heading into the 2016 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos’ quarterback position consisted of Trevor Siemian and Mark Sanchez. The Broncos understandably traded a third round pick to move up in the first round and get Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, who is now set to compete for a starting job with Siemian in year two.

Just over a week before the 2017 NFL Draft, the Broncos’ two quarterbacks remain Siemian and Lynch, with the likely scenario being a third quarterback added through the draft.

John Elway doesn’t often skip drafting a quarterback, having taken one in all but two of his draft classes (2011, 2014) as a Denver Broncos executive.

I don’t expect Elway to pass on a quarterback in this year’s draft, even though at the Scouting Combine he declared that none of them appear to be the caliber of what he believes to be a franchise quarterback.

As a matter of personal preference, I don’t see any reason not to draft a quarterback unless you have three or even four guys that have legitimate starting ability. There’s little point in keeping high priced backups in my opinion, but having talented young players with starting potential keeps the competition strong, and allows for roster flexibility down the road through trades.

Even in a draft class that doesn’t feature an ‘Andrew Luck’ caliber player (most don’t…), I think there are some guys that will be of interest to Elway and the Broncos’ new coaching staff, featuring Mike McCoy and Bill Musgrave.
