Denver Broncos first round options in the 2017 NFL Draft
Via staff writer Derek Esquibel:
Todd Davis filled in admirably inside last season for Denver, but adding a player of Foster’s caliber would be an instant upgrade. It may be a reach to say Foster falls to the Broncos at 20, so this scenario could involve a trade.
A shoulder injury and an incident with a medical personnel at the Scouting Combine could raise some red flags with teams, however his talent won’t allow him to drop too far.
Foster was the best player on a stacked Crimson Tide defense. In his senior season with Alabama, Foster finished with 115 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and five sacks.
In his time in Alabama, he showed a knack for punishing opposing players with his speed and athleticism to get to the ball as quick as a hiccup. Foster is the type of linebacker that will always be around the ball and won’t stop until the whistle is blown. Although known more as a run stuffer, foster has an underrated ability against the pass to add to his arsenal.
Where the concerns come up are with his injury history. Foster missed the combine as he has been recovering from shoulder surgery. While his shoulder isn’t a major concern, his willingness to throw his body around without care could result in more injuries.
Denver’s offense clearly has more holes to fill. Grabbing a left tackle or a playmaker (cough McCaffrey cough Howard cough) seems like the more obvious way to go. However, if a player of Foster’s caliber is available the Broncos must pull the trigger.
The Broncos’ defense is looking to maintain the same elite status as the 2015-16 season and Reuben Foster can be the answer.
