It remains a mystery to me why Desmond King’s draft stock continues to slide, but some smart NFL team (hopefully the Broncos) will scoop him up at the appropriate time.

You could slot King at 51 overall, and I wouldn’t question it.

One thing that John Elway and the Broncos’ front office seem to value over anything with their defensive back picks is experience. King has it in spades.

A four-year starter for the Hawkeyes (not easy to get on Kirk Ferentz’s good graces as a true freshman), King has been one of the best shut-down corners in the nation. He has a nose for the football, and is a willing, capable tackler.

In his sensational junior season, King reminded me a lot of Chris Harris Jr. He can not only play cornerback, but scouts think he’ll be a great safety at the next level. With Kayvon Webster gone, the Broncos would love to have someone that can step into the defensive back rotation and on special teams immediately. King is pro-ready.

King is also one of the best return specialists in this year’s draft.
