Denver Broncos need a “kick in the pants” at wide receiver. Free agent Anquan Boldin could be a candidate to provide exactly that…

Make no mistake, the Denver Broncos will address a third weapon in free agency or NFL Draft and one of the potential targets played for the Detroit Lions.

There is an abundance of talent as a third receiver available to the Denver Broncos, but the in-house options are not taking advantage of opportunities. Cody Latimer and Bennie Fowler are two of the most gifted wide receivers on the roster. Yet, due to inconsistencies and injuries, Latimer and Fowler find themselves with the rest of the pack.

One possibility in free agency is an all-time great wide receiver and borderline Hall of Famer. Anquan Boldin ranks 14th all-time receiving yards (13.779) and 23rd in touchdowns (82). Boldin played his entire career with an edge like Steve Smith, who recently retired. The Broncos group of wide receivers could use a jolt at the position and the possibility of Boldin would give them a needed punch.

The intriguing option of Boldin is another team-friendly contract on the books for John Elway and the Broncos. Boldin signed a one-year $2.75 million contract with the Detroit Lions before the 2016 season. It is entirely possible Boldin will search for another low-cost deal in search of a ring.

Leadership is the underlying importance of signing Boldin on the Broncos. It is not because Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel are not vocal leaders, they are. The Broncos need more voices on offense. In an offense, which lacked leadership all season long Boldin can be the constant voice in the locker room.

If there is a best friend for a quarterback it is a safety net at a number three wide receiver or tight end. It does not matter if Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch or Tony Romo is under center in 2017, a friendly valve in Anquan Boldin offers comfortability.

It is likely team adds depth as a predominant third weapon in the offense through the draft due to the plethora of choices. However, Elway fixes all the needs on the football team before the draft. There is a possibility he signs a wide receiver before the draft.
