RomoWatch 2017: What’s Up With Tony Romo And The Denver Broncos
By Steven Kriz
This game of chicken that the Broncos and Texans are playing with the Cowboys doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. The entire quarterback market is on hold for the moment, but if other shoes begin to drop, there could be some movement on the Romo front.
For now there are far too many veteran quarterbacks available for anyone’s hand to be forced. The Cowboys did bring in Josh McCown for a visit last week, a sign that they would like him to be the backup to Dak Prescott this coming season. As Todd Archer indicated at the very end of his piece, if McCown were to begin taking visits with other teams, it could force the Cowboys hand if they truly value him as a backup.

If this doesn’t happen, the next logical date to look at would be in two weeks at the league meetings. Put all the high-ups for every team in the same room, and people talk. What could happen then is trades could happen. If Jerry Jones decided to let Romo meet with a team, and work out a restructured deal, that could spark a trade from either the Broncos or the Texans. However, they could also indicate to Jones, in person, that they have no interest in trading for Romo, and the Cowboys could decide it is best to move on.
It is likely that the Cowboys would like to wrap this up before their offseason program begins. The worst thing case scenario for them would be Romo showing up to OTA’s, suffering a freak injury, and guaranteeing his base salary for 2017, along with a $24 million cap hit that they cannot afford. If the Broncos and Texans continue to take a hard line, he will eventually be cut, and both teams will be free to pursue him as a free agent.
Once a free agent, the Broncos will then put on the full-court press to sign Romo. They will have their salary limits, of course, not wanting to overspend for Romo. It is also always possible that the Texans will come in and make a stronger offer, although all indications as of now are that they will not be willing to offer what the Broncos will in guaranteed money.
Remember, Elway was the one who landed Peyton Manning. If John Elway believes that Tony Romo can help this team truly compete for a world championship for the next season, two or three, then there is a good possibility that Romo is the quarterback for the Denver Broncos in 2017.
