According to multiple reports, the Dallas Cowboys will release veteran quarterback Tony Romo Thursday. Romo to the Broncos may be coming soon.

Let Romo Watch 2017 begin.  According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will be released Thursday in accordance with the NFL’s league New Year. This will leave Romo in a position to hand pick his new team.  John Elway—you’re up.

Since November, the Denver Broncos have long been linked to Romo as his preferred destination to play in 2017. The fit is extremely natural, as we detailed here last week. The Broncos, of course will have a limit on what they are willing to pay to Romo.  However, as Mike Klis of 9 News reports, the Broncos are expected to pursue the veteran quarterback upon his release. Please let the plane tracking, and steakhouse watching commence immediately come Thursday.

As has been the case throughout this entire process, the two main contenders for Romo’s services are expected to be the Denver Broncos and the Houston Texans. Ironically, these are the same two teams who battled over Brock Osweiler’s services just a year ago.

If Houston chooses to overpay, they may well end up the winner of the battle again. But Jerry Jones spoke a few days ago about the “Do Right Rule.”  He is referring to an unenforceable agreement that Tony Romo will not sign with a team that will directly interfere with the Cowboys.

While naturally Jones would want Romo to avoid division rivals, it is unclear if Houston, the other Texas team, would fall on this list as well.

This is just the first step in the process, but from reading the tea leaves, there is a great chance that Tony Romo is the new starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the very near future. Buckle up Broncos Country—things just got real.
