Adam Schefter reports the Cowboys are hosting a backup quarterback for a visit. Is Tony Romo on his way out sooner than later?

We don’t know what the future holds for Tony Romo and the Denver Broncos, but it appears as though things could be moving along as of Wednesday morning.

Schefter’s report is a pretty significant development in the Romo saga, though ultimately it means nothing unless the Cowboys release Romo in addition to potentially signing McCown. There are a lot of moving parts here, but McCown was let go by the Browns, so he’s free to sign anytime.

If the Cowboys sign McCown, it would seem to be a pretty clear sign they are moving on from Romo, but will that be via release or trade?

At last we heard, the Cowboys were clinging to the last bit of leverage they had, letting rumors of a three-team trade leak and potentially threatening to not release Romo until they deem it necessary.

Releasing Romo isn’t going to be an easy pill to swallow for Dallas. They have to eat his remaining dead cap, which is nearly $20 million. It’s not an ideal situation, to be sure, but Dallas has their franchise QB of the future in Dak Prescott, and the trade value for Romo with his contract is non-existent.

They are in a pretty rare position of having a valuable asset at quarterback and not being able to trade him for anything, which is going to be the worst part of this whole thing for Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner.

Jones has a great relationship with Romo, but the Cowboys are not seemingly following the ‘do right’ plan Romo has agreed to put in place (not signing with a rival team, etc…). If Jones is unwilling to ultimately release Romo anytime soon, it could put the Broncos out of the running for his services.

Denver isn’t going to pass on getting potential high impact free agents so they can wait for Romo. They reportedly have two free agent priority lists, one that includes Romo and one that doesn’t.

In other words, John Elway has a ‘Plan B’ this time around, unlike with Peyton Manning.

Whether or not Romo comes to Denver is potentially hinging on his being released in the next couple of days. The visit of McCown to Dallas could be a precursor to Romo getting his wish of being released very soon.
