According to a report from Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos are ready to pursue Tony Romo if/when he’s released from the Dallas Cowboys…

The Denver Broncos’ pursuit of Tony Romo is reportedly about to become very real…

Klis’ report is not the first we’ve heard connecting the Broncos to Romo, but it’s the latest and this is what he’s heard:

"Multiple NFL sources tell 9News Broncos general manager John Elway and the team are ready to pursue Romo if and when the quarterback is released by Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. One agent source also told 9News that Romo’s preferred choice is the Broncos."

Klis goes on to explain that the Broncos are not the only team in pursuit of Romo. What he’s heard — and what we’re hearing as well — is that Houston will be in hot pursuit of Romo as well despite acquiring Brock Osweiler on a big money deal last offseason.

There are even rumors floating around that Houston would be willing to eat Osweiler’s $25 million in dead money remaining just to get him off the roster and admit their mistake.

One way or another, this offseason will feature some significant intrigue for the Broncos at the quarterback position, Romo as the centerpiece. Adding Romo on paper seems like a phenomenal move for Denver, which is apparently just a couple pieces away from Super Bowl contention.

It wouldn’t be the greatest news for Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian, who are hoping they can be the franchise quarterback this team desires. Adding Romo limits their ability to get onto the field in 2017, and potentially 2018. Vance Joseph spoke at the Combine about the benefits to quarterbacks being able to learn while on the sidelines, so it seems the Broncos are comfortable keeping him waiting a little bit longer for his opportunity.

Any deal signed by Romo with the Broncos would be incentive-laden, from what we understand. He will have to sign a contract that has a low cap hit and escalates based on performance and games played. That should hardly come as a surprise, given his inability to stay healthy through the years.

The Broncos still want to pursue upgrades elsewhere in free agency. If Romo could somehow come with just a $6-8 million cap hit, the Broncos could recover those funds quickly by making a couple roster moves.

If the Cowboys release Romo quickly, the Broncos will move quickly in pursuit. As Klis stated in his report, there’s mutual interest between the two parties, and John Elway will undoubtedly be having conversations with Romo’s agent Tom Condon as soon as Jerry Jones makes the call.

The question then becomes, how soon will he make the call?

The Broncos don’t have forever to wait, and there are other free agents out there that Denver has interest in bringing aboard. Unlike the situation with Peyton Manning, the Broncos have a plan ‘B’ if signing Romo falls through.

Buckle in for this wild ride…
