Denver Broncos draft thoughts: Trading up and projecting needs
This Denver Broncos roster is very young, and very talented. There are obviously areas that need some serious attention going forward, but I don’t think the Broncos will end up keeping 10 rookies on the final 53-man roster.
They are currently projected to have 10 selections in the draft with compensatory picks included, but with those compensatory picks being trade-able this season, there’s added intrigue and many more possibilities that wouldn’t have existed a year ago.
If the Broncos go into the draft with five top 100 selections, it’s not out of the question to think they would only come away from it all with three. Or if there’s someone the Broncos target on day two or three that inexplicably falls, they could use picks to move up and specifically identify players that can make an impact sooner rather than later.
In other words, this draft class will not necessarily have to be about quantity, but the highest quality. That’s not to say the Broncos aren’t always striving for the highest quality or value in each pick, but we have seen a pattern of reaching for players at positions of need in the second or third round of draft classes where the Broncos would have honestly just been better off moving up and trying to get a more talented prospect.
I think we could see that this season because of the fact that the Broncos aren’t likely to keep 10 rookies on the 53-man roster next season, with such a young roster already and a big class of free agents expected to be brought in.
