The Oakland Raiders did not renew the contract of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, making him an intriguing option for the Denver Broncos…

The Oakland Raiders did not renew the contract of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, promoting quarterbacks coach Todd Downing to take his position. This move makes Musgrave one of the most interesting free agent coordinator options on the market as the Denver Broncos pursue a new coach and offensive coordinator.

Musgrave led the Raiders to the 7th highest scoring offense in the NFL this past season, and the 6th most yards per game. The Raiders averaged 26 points per contest this season, and sputtered only when starting quarterback Derek Carr went down with an injury.

If I were making recommendations, I would certainly highly recommend the Broncos bring Musgrave in to coach the offense and quarterbacks while also hiring Kyle Shanahan as the team’s head coach. Those are two of the brightest offensive minds in the game today, and two coaches that had substantial success this past season.

Shanahan’s Falcons ranked 1st in the NFL in scoring, 2nd in overall yards. Both teams ranked in the top 10 in passing efficiency and both teams were in the top six in the NFL in rushing yards.

In other words, adding Shanahan and Musgrave would be a great start to the Broncos bringing in some positive culture offensively, something that has been missing for two seasons, even with the great Peyton Manning leading the charge in 2015.

Personnel obviously matters here, but the Broncos are not without talent offensively. A couple of upgrades along the offensive line and an impact player or two from the 2017 NFL Draft will do wonders for this team, as will some players returning from injury (C.J. Anderson, in specific).

Even if the Broncos don’t hire both Shanahan and Musgrave, adding Musgrave as the offensive coordinator would seem to be a sensible move for the new head coach. He was a player for the Denver Broncos from 1995-96 so he obviously knows John Elway. This seems like a good match for both parties…
