Trevor Siemian’s week off gave him extra preparation time

The Denver Broncos may have lost on Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons, but Paxton Lynch gained valuable experience, and Trevor Siemian was getting a head start.

The Denver Broncos knew at least on Saturday last week that Trevor Siemian wouldn’t be playing against the Atlanta Falcons, and that gave him a little head start on preparation for the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night football.

Prep time for a Thursday night game is always tough because of the quick turnaround. Especially when you still have to mentally recover from a loss like the Broncos had against the Falcons, evaluate your mistakes, and move forward with it, it can be tough on a young quarterback to come back and get ready quickly for a new opponent.

The Broncos certainly didn’t wish injury on Trevor Siemian, but it was wise to hold him out for a game for more reasons than one, one reason being the fact that he has been prepping for San Diego now since Saturday, giving him basically a normal game week’s worth of prep time.

“I checked them out Saturday night when I found out that I wasn’t playing. ‘Kubes’ wanted me to do that, so I got a little head start.”

Gary Kubiak, who isn’t going to be with the Broncos on Thursday, had the foresight to get his quarterback ready for his next start. Siemian prepared all week last week as though he was going to play against the Falcons, and then on Saturday, the gameplan shifted over to Paxton Lynch and Siemian began work on the Chargers while also continuing to get himself right physically.

He said on Tuesday that he’s getting better and better every day.

“It feels good. I’m getting better every day,” Siemian said. “I think today and the last couple of days, I’ve kind of made some strides. I’m taking it one day at a time and going from there.”

To this point in the season, both Broncos quarterbacks have been guilty of holding onto the ball too long. Perhaps holding on to the ball too long caused Siemian to take a much harder hit than he otherwise would have, and he knows that.

It was apparent on Sunday that Siemian’s presence in the lineup is still needed at this point, so hopefully we see him out there on Thursday night — as he expects to be — starting again.
