The Denver Broncos would have reason to be outraged at any sort of suspension for injured cornerback  Aqib Talib, who was shot in the leg over the summer…

Regardless of what most people think about Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib, he’s an incredibly important part of the league’s best defense.

Since coming into the league, Talib has been one of the game’s best ballhawk cornerbacks and a guy who has scored more touchdowns in his career (8) than every active defensive player aside from DeAngelo Hall, who has been in the league four more seasons than Talib.

He might be a little crazy on the field, but the intangibles he brings to the table are valuable to this Broncos team and that has been evident over the last two seasons.

The Broncos signed Talib to a pretty massive contract in 2014, but it allows the team to basically get out of it with no strings attached after year three, which happens to be at the end of this season. It also just so happens that the Broncos are in great position to move on after this year if they want to.

After Talib’s latest incident off the field, there’s been speculation he could miss up to eight games. Any such suspension would be an outrage and something the Broncos would have to put up a major fuss about.

It’s not that the Broncos couldn’t absorb such a blow to their roster, it’s the fact that Talib hasn’t been arrested. He hasn’t been charged with anything. If anything, he’s a victim in this situation and the NFL has absolutely no grounds to suspend him at this point.

The legal process is ongoing, but if Talib is slapped with a suspension before the legal process plays out or before he’s cited for something, the Broncos could pull a Patriots and take it to court.

While Tom Brady and the Patriots were accused of cheating and ultimately accepted their penalties for doing so, suspending Talib for being shot would be similar to suspending a player for getting his foot stepped on and breaking a toe.

It’s absolutely laughable.

Any suspension for Talib would be on the basis of assumption, not fact, and that’s not something the Broncos should let slide. Any sort of action against Talib by the league would certainly be met with defense by the Broncos, or at least it should.

Hopefully this process plays itself out and both the Broncos and Talib are able to get back to football business. He returned to the field for the first time since being shot on June 5th this past week, and he was upbeat about it. He said his teammates and everyone up to John Elway were excited to see him back as well.

“The love around the building—from the rookies to John Elway—has been great since June 5th. All of the text messages, all of the calls, all of the ‘welcome backs’ today, there was a bunch of love out here today. I definitely felt it.”
