Denver Broncos offensive lineman Michael Schofield, who is expected to be the primary backup tackle, was playing 1st team guard due to injuries at camp…
What is going to happen with Denver Broncos offensive lineman Michael Schofield this year? After allowing five sacks in one game last year against Khalil Mack and the Oakland Raiders, many fans would probably say they don’t want him in the lineup at all.
The Broncos aren’t ready to give up quite yet.
Schofield is one of the taller players on the team, but was playing at a much lighter weight that you would like at under 300 pounds. Some list Schofield at 6-6, some at 6-7, but either way, it was definitely a priority for him to add some weight this offseason.
He had reportedly gotten his weight up to 308 pounds, and hopefully he will keep that playing weight. With the additions the Broncos made this offseason of Russell Okung and Donald Stephenson, Schofield’s best shot at playing time was moving to the inside.
Due to injuries suffered by both Ty Sambrailo and Max Garcia, he got that opportunity on Wednesday.
Gary Kubiak talked about the shuffling on the offensive line and the challenges it presents just to get a practice going.
“[OL] Ty [Sambrailo] is out today, so there was an opportunity. The questions is, do you keep working Connor there and leave Michael alone? [G] Max [Garcia] also missed a day. A lot of jumping through hoops as coaches trying to get practice going today. What an opportunity for both of them. That’s what you have to be able to do in this business. You have to be able to do a lot of things when you get the chance.”
The memory of Schofield’s performance against the Raiders last year still stings plenty, but there were a number of games where he played pretty well and nobody was complaining when the Broncos won the Super Bowl.
Perhaps a change of position would suit Schofield well, similar to how it should wind up being a good move for Sambrailo.
