Denver Broncos: The pre-camp addition of Marlon Brown is an intriguing one for a team that was already pretty deep at WR. Can he make the squad?
The Denver Broncos added wide receiver Marlon Brown at the eve of training camp, and while he’ll have plenty of catching up to do over the course of the next few weeks, this is a really interesting pickup.
Brown, who was a former undrafted free agent pickup of the Baltimore Ravens, scored his first career touchdowns against the Broncos in a game that Broncos fans won’t soon forget. Brown’s first career TD came in the same game that Peyton Manning threw seven touchdown passes to start the 2013 season.
It was the start of a very fine 2013 season for Brown, who finished with seven touchdowns that year. He hasn’t scored a touchdown since that season, but he did play for head coach Gary Kubiak in 2014 when he was the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens had re-signed Brown earlier this offseason to a minimum contract, but waived him due to injury shortly thereafter.
Now healthy, Brown had been working out for teams as recently as last week, at least per what had been reported. The Washington Redskins were one of the teams that brought him in for a workout along with quarterback Jimmy Clausen, and apparently the Broncos got in that mix as well.
Brown is an intriguing combination of size and athleticism at 6-5, 215 pounds. He’s been a productive receiver in this league, and is only 25 years old. The Broncos are also getting him at a seriously discounted price.

The national narrative as it deals with the wide receiver position for the Broncos is much different than it is among close observers or fans. The national media sees the WR position in Denver as Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and then not much else. Close observers and fans will tell you that the Broncos go at least four or five deep, perhaps even having their top six positions set with Thomas, Sanders, Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler, Jordan Norwood, and Jordan Taylor.
However deep people think the Broncos are, or how deep they actually are, there’s nothing wrong with added competition in training camp. Brown is the type of guy that could come in and win a roster spot, so why not? This, to me, is a really interesting pre-camp addition. It’s not an aging veteran player to come in and plug a hole, and it’s also not a typical ‘camp body’.
The Broncos’ coaching staff knows Brown well, he’s proven capable of putting up good numbers in this league, and there’s going to be legitimate competition at receiver. The Broncos could find themselves with a very big group of receivers by the end of all this if Brown winds up making it.
