Fullback
A Peyton Manning-less offense means more use of the fullback in the Gary Kubiak system. Andy Janovich was drafted to be the main target at fullback, but is expected to see competition at the position from versatile back Juwan Thompson. Thompson has been a preseason and Training Camp “Cinderella” in years past, but now his place on the roster remains up in the air. Janovich was used exclusively in the first team reps this morning and afternoon only adding more speculation of Thompson’s place on the roster. Not to be overlooked though, Thompson is still a heck of a thumping player.
Thompson can still make the roster if the team decides to keep two fullbacks. Kubiak likes seeing versatile tight ends play fullback as well, but the team has been searching for a true fullback for two years. The Broncos looked to add a fullback a year ago in the NFL Draft, but the Green Bay Packers took the player the Broncos wanted. This year, the Broncos have found their Howard Griffith in Andy Janovich.
Janovich was not used in the Nebraska Cornhuskers offense until this last year. He will be asked to be exclusively a fullback, but if called upon could present the Broncos with the Peyton Hillis they had during the McDaniel’s era.
