As the contract situation for Von Miller drags on, Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has a subtle but strong message…
Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has never been one to mince words, and he had a subtle but strong message for Von Miller in a recent radio appearance.
Here’s a link to the article from Pro Football Talk that relays Wolfe’s quote from the Sirius XM appearance, and here’s what he had to say:
“Business is business, and that’s his business. And he has to do what he’s gotta do. Obviously, I took a different route and decided that this is where I want to be so I’m going to take a significant haircut to stay here, and that’s fine with me. But some people don’t feel that way.”
Pro Football Talk makes a solid point about the fact that players like Wolfe and cornerback Chris Harris Jr. took well-below market contracts to stay with the Broncos, while Miller is holding out for top dollar. There’s nothing inherently wrong with either strategy, though paying Von Miller the amount of money the Broncos are (hopefully) about to could create a bit of an awkward situation in the locker room when other guys have taken ‘haircuts’.

I don’t necessarily think that’ll be the case, but the longer Miller decides to stay away from the team, the more angst other guys could build up. His teammates undoubtedly want to see him get what he deserves, but to see it come from the team that paid them so much less could create some issues down the road.
Either way, getting Von Miller back is going to be paramount for the success of the defense. Wolfe seemed to indicate that with all the changes on the Broncos’ defense, the ‘next man up’ mentality should continue to be successful.
Let’s hope in the next few days, these issues are all over and done with, and Miller is locked up long term.
