As training camp approaches, it’s time to start looking at how the Denver Broncos’ depth chart could end up. It’s still really early, and things have to be decided on the field, which is why this is such a tough exercise to complete.

We know that the amount of money you get paid doesn’t always necessarily dictate your playing time, but it’s pretty clear that the Broncos sent a message to C.J. Anderson — he will be the featured back in this offense. Period.

Anderson signed an offer sheet with the Miami Dolphins and was fully prepared to go play for Adam Gase before the Broncos somewhat shockingly matched an offer sheet that was worth $6 million this season.

That was a tough pill for many to swallow, but with all of the other losses this offseason, the Broncos had to make some moves to keep continuity and unity on the roster, and having Anderson back was a huge step in the right direction.

In addition to retaining Anderson, the Broncos brought back last year’s leading rusher Ronnie Hillman, much the the chagrin of a large number of fans. Hillman has become the ‘goat’ of this Broncos team since being drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, but made some big plays last season that helped propel the Broncos into the top seed of the playoffs in the AFC.

With those two returning and the drafting of Devontae Booker out of Utah, it would seem the Broncos have a pretty solid rotation at the running back spot, but there will be competition. Let’s take a look at how this depth chart could wind up over the next month…
