Denver Broncos pass rusher and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller says progress is being made toward getting a new contract with the team…

Perhaps it’s the fact that the band (mostly) got back together for a trip to the White House to visit the President, or perhaps it’s just that the deadline is now a little over a month away, but Denver Broncos star linebacker Von Miller revealed that progress has been made toward getting a new contract done…

‘A lot of progress’ in fact.

Locking up Miller long-term is the biggest situation facing the Broncos this offseason. While it’s a foregone conclusion that he will be on the field for the Broncos one way or another this season, under what type of contractual situation is another matter.

The Broncos placed the exclusive franchise tag on Miller, meaning he can’t even negotiate with other teams. The Broncos placed a value on Miller that was higher than multiple first round picks, essentially.

That’s saying something, but it’s hardly a surprise. Not many players are given the exclusive tag, but one of Miller’s caliber and consistency is deserving. The Broncos’ goal is and has always been to lock him up with a long-term contract, and Miller deserves to be paid as one of — if not the — highest paid defensive players in the NFL today.

The Broncos are no longer paying a ‘franchise’ quarterback the type of money that is required to do so, so Miller will take that spot on the team’s salary cap book at somewhere around $20 million per season.

If that’s merely a formality at this point, one has to wonder what the hold up is in terms of the contract getting done. Perhaps it’s guaranteed money, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Miller get at least three or four years of a six-year contract fully guaranteed at the time of signing.

It’s going to be a whopper of a contract, especially after the type of postseason Miller just had. That will not be quickly forgotten.

If the Broncos can get Miller’s deal done before training camp, we’ll all sleep a little more soundly at night.
