The Denver Broncos are taking a rather obvious approach to the quarterback competition this offseason between Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian, and rookie Paxton Lynch. They are splitting the reps down the middle…
Going right down the middle is Gary Kubiak’s game plan. All 3 Broncos QBs were given 1st team reps. No one listed as 1st,2nd,3rd string

If the Broncos were forced to make a depth chart today, it would probably go Sanchez, Siemian, then Lynch. That’s not an indictment on Lynch or a huge endorsement for Sanchez, it’s simply the pecking order that’s been established by seniority.
At least, that’s the way it seems.
If it were to be based on the knowledge each QB has of the Gary Kubiak system, it would probably go Siemian, Sanchez, and Lynch.
If it were based on flat out talent and upside?
Well, I’ll leave that up to your imagination.
The point of all this is to say that the Broncos are embracing a true quarterback competition. There are plenty of nay-sayers who want to talk like Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian don’t have a shot at emerging from training camp with the starting job in hand, but there’s no question that the Broncos are nothing if not patient.
We all saw that last year when Peyton Manning struggled to 17 interceptions in nine games…
The fact of the matter is, there’s no real rush for Lynch to be the starting quarterback in Denver. Is he likely to be the no. 1 guy when the season opens against Carolina? Personally, I believe so, but that doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee.

The Broncos are going to extract the best from each quarterback on the roster by giving each of them an opportunity at the job throughout the offseason. OTAs will conclude in June before the team reconvenes in July for Training Camp. At that point, we’ll have a much clearer picture of which player will get the top reps.
In fact, this could go well into the preseason. The Broncos have the top defense in the NFL to rely on while they find the right answer to this question. At this point, there may honestly be multiple correct answers. We need to see Trevor Siemian against another team’s top defense. The Kubiak offense is a breeding ground for quarterback success, which is why it was so odd to see both Manning and Osweiler struggle with it. Most quarterbacks who play in this offense enjoy wild success because of the way they are able to make plays out of the pocket and use the running game to set up a more open passing attack.
While we’re all chomping at the bit for Paxton Lynch to take over the top spot on the QB depth chart, the Broncos are embracing the art of competition — the right way.
