DOVE VALLEY, Colo.–At times in the NFL, teams are awarded players are awarded off of waivers and such was the case for the Denver Broncos Tuesday. As reported by the Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala, the Broncos were awarded the services of fullback Toben Opurum from the New Orleans Saints.
Because the Broncos are currently at the maximum amount of players allowed, they were forced to make a release and decided to sever ties with former Southern Utah tight end Anthony Norris.
Opurum is a Kansas product and the Broncos have had success with Jayhawks in the past and present as former Broncos linebacker Steven Johnson, currently of the Pittsburgh Steelers, excelled with Denver from 2012-2014. Currently, Broncos cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib, each of whom are former Jayhawks themselves, comprise two components of the feared Broncos’ No Fly Zone defense.
Opurum first came into the NFL in 2013 and spent time with both the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs while staying with the Texans in 2014 and later going to the Saints that season. In 2015, Opurum made his only game appearances, playing in two games with New Orleans.
There are no statistical records following Opurum but on his Twitter account, he revealed that he refuses to surrender to the word “can’t,” and always takes disbelief in his abilities from skeptics as a challenge.
It’s uncertain as to what he can do for the Broncos but at 6’1″ 250 pounds, he is an imposing physical specimen and with fellow fullback Andy Janovich, the team has some depth at the position.
Furthermore, various reports state head coach Gary Kubiak likes to use fullbacks in his offense so perhaps Opurum can find a home at 5,280 feet. That’s the fascinating part of training camp. There’s always a couple of lightly-regarded, low-profile players who sneak onto the Broncos’ roster. Time will tell.
