2016 NFL Draft: Are the Denver Broncos interested in Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskel? What kind of prospect is he?

On this episode of the soap opera that is the Denver Broncos quarterback situation, we turn to the crop of prospects in the 2016 NFL Draft rather than simply what’s out there on the free agent market. We know the Broncos like Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian, but you can expect at least another couple of quarterbacks to be brought into the mix as the offseason progresses.

One player that could be of interest to the Broncos is Louisiana Tech’s Jeff Driskel, and the Broncos had a contingent at his pro day on March 22nd, according to WalterFootball.com correspondent Tony Pauline.

With what the Broncos are trying to do at the QB spot, a player like Driskel makes a ton of sense. Athletically and physically, he’s probably the most impressive quarterback in the draft, which is saying something. Take a look at his measurables…

Quarterbacks who are built like Driskel with the kind of athleticism he possesses don’t come around all the time, and you can see on his list of comparables that he’s not too far off of the measurables we saw from Cam Newton, which is remarkable.

Now, I’m not saying Driskel is Cam Newton. Let’s pump the brakes a bit. I am saying that he’s an option either in the third round or possibly with a day three pick that the Broncos could look at a guy who has developmental potential. If they are able to land Colin Kaepernick in a trade, they would be interested in a guy who could sit for a year or two and learn the Kubiak system.

Driskel has that kind of potential.

He’s going to need to progress from a couple of college programs with quick reads and very basic concepts for QBs to grab hold of before he’s ready for NFL playing time. He will be able to get by athletically for certain, but there’s a reason why a player who is this physically gifted is going to be picked on day three.

At one point in his college career, Driskel was heralded as the next Tim Tebow, mainly because he took over for Tebow at Florida once upon a time, but he has made significant progress in his mechanics over the course of the last year. The worry is that hold habits die hard, and if you want to make an NFL pocket passer out of Driskel, he’s got to be able to adapt his game quickly.

If the Broncos feel he’s worth developing, this would be a very interesting player to add on draft weekend.
