4. Compensatory picks

This seems like a small victory, but it’s a big one. The Broncos were rewarded for letting go of average players to bad teams.

So, thank you Julius Thomas for netting us an extra third-round draft pick. Because of Thomas’ insane contract given by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Broncos have upgraded from just three picks in the top 100 to four.

They have also got a pick now in the fourth round, just a handful of spots down from where they traded a pick to the Baltimore Ravens in the Gino Gradkowski deal.

Not one of Elway’s finer moments, but we’ll assume Kubiak convinced him that it would work… At any rate, Elway also got the Ravens’ high 5th rounder in that trade, so the Broncos have six selections in the top 144.

That’s strong. So, we thank you, all of you who were able to cash in on free agency to play on bad teams. We’re now reaping the benefits.
