The Denver Broncos quarterback situation is, well, a little off right now. While it is important to have a good quarterback, in this case, it might be more important to just have a warm body occupying the spot. Bring in the Butt-Fumble! Anyone who thinks John Elway is going to put all his eggs in the Mark Sanchez basket is sorely mistaken.

However, the real issue here is about attraction. Having a shiny new trophy certainly helps, but when potential free agents ask, “who is going to be the quarterback,” what is Elway going to say? Well, we have Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian. Oh, well in that case, where do I sign?
Reports of the Broncos trying to trade for Colin Kaepernick have been out there, and that could work. Ryan Fitzpatrick is available, but possibly too expensive for what Elway wants to do. Robert Griffin III? Johnny Manziel? Have any names been mentioned that make you get all giddy about another Super Bowl run?
How do players commit to a team without a quarterback?
Think about the greatest defenses to win Super Bowls. Any repeats in the group? The ’85 Bears couldn’t get it done. Neither could the 2000 Ravens, or the 2002 Buccaneers. What did they have in common? Quarterback problems. Now, the defending Super Bowl champion Broncos, with one of the greatest defenses in the history of the NFL are facing quarterback issues.
How do players commit to a team without a quarterback? Every player in the NFL likes to think they are just as important as the quarterback, but they all know the truth. Without a good quarterback, winning is nearly impossible. With Denver’s defense, another future Hall of Famer, would be nice, but not necessary. Just a serviceable guy who won’t throw it to the wrong team should be enough. Mark Sanchez? Obviously not the ultimate solution here.
I am the first to shout, “In Elway We Trust.” I am sure there is a plan beyond Siemian and Sanchez. Kaepernick might work if Denver can get a deal done, and Fitzpatrick would probably be a good fit in Gary Kubiak’s offense at the right price. For now, Elway will have to get deals done with a simple promise, Denver will find somebody. Beyond that, no promises.
